The Kansas Jayhawks football team is one of the most storied programs in college football history. The Jayhawks have won three national championships (1909, 1920, and 1969) and 12 Big 12 championships. The Jayhawks have also produced some of the greatest players in college football history, including Gale Sayers, John Hadl, and David Jaynes.

The Jayhawks have had a number of ups and downs throughout their history, but they have always been one of the most competitive teams in the Big 12. In recent years, the Jayhawks have been led by head coach Lance Leipold, who has helped the team to improve its record and make its way back to bowl contention.



The Early Years

The Kansas Jayhawks football team was founded in 1890. The Jayhawks played their first game against the nearby Washburn Ichabods, and they lost by a score of 24-0.

Despite the loss, the Jayhawks quickly became one of the best teams in the Midwest. In 1909, the Jayhawks won their first national championship under head coach A.A. Stagg. The Jayhawks finished the season with a record of 10-1, and they defeated the Penn Quakers in the post-season Kansas City Classic.


The Golden Age of Kansas Football

The Kansas Jayhawks football team entered its golden age in the 1960s under head coach Bob Devaney. Devaney led the Jayhawks to a record of 63-17-2 during his seven seasons at the helm. The Jayhawks also won two Big Eight championships and two national championships under Devaney.

The Jayhawks' first national championship under Devaney came in 1969. The Jayhawks finished the season with a record of 11-1, and they defeated the Arkansas Razorbacks in the Sugar Bowl.

The Jayhawks' second national championship under Devaney came in 1971. The Jayhawks finished the season with a record of 11-0, and they defeated the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Orange Bowl.



Recent Success

The Kansas Jayhawks football team has had some recent success under head coach Lance Leipold. Leipold led the Jayhawks to a record of 2-10 in his first season at the helm, but he improved the team's record to 6-7 in his second season.

In 2023, the Jayhawks are expected to be one of the most competitive teams in the Big 12. The Jayhawks have a number of talented players on both sides of the ball, including quarterback Jason Bean, running back Devin Neal, and linebacker Rich Miller Jr.
